PHAETON HISTORICAL RESEARCH SPECIALIST

A dedicated researcher of folklore and obscure archival records, Carl R. "Ray" Cart Jr. has pursued historical leads across the United States and published over a dozen articles promoting the responsible investigation of local history. A former military jet aircraft technician, Ray also brings mechanical expertise to Phaeton projects.

Ray's articles often appear in "treasure hunting" magazines, whose amateur audiences can serve as either valuable supporters of historical research or extremely damaging looters of archaeological sites. Ray's work reaches out to these groups in an effort to encourage high standards and a better relationship between amateurs and historical professionals.

Military Jet Engine Mechanic

Ray's background as a jet engine mechanic served Phaeton particularly well on the June 2007 Jet Wing mission to examine the Horten IX Ho 229 V3 German turbojet flying wing aircraft held by the Smithsonian. For the Air Force Ray used to repair and maintain combat jet fighter engines. In the pre-mission briefing Ray helped the Phaeton field team understand the function and significance of the jet engines that powered the pioneering flying wing craft developed for the Luftwaffe in World War II.

During Phaeton's direct examination of the Ho 229 V3, Ray's expertise was invaluable as he identified various interior elements of the aircraft and explained their function to the rest of the team.

Ray also worked with Phaeton Mechanical Engineer Hugh Williams to measure parts of the aircraft in our efforts to determine whether the wings in the Smithsonian collection would indeed fit the fuselage with which they are associated. Curator Tom Dietz reported that the three components have apparently never been joined together to form a complete aircraft, since the vehicle was captured by American soldiers in an incomplete state of construction. The Phaeton report on this mission will show whether the interfaces we measured would support a straightforward assembly if the aircraft is ever prepared for public display.
